Graduated Licensing

As of April 1st, 1994, Ontario requires new drivers applying for their first automobile license to enter Ontario's graduated licensing system. The graduated licensing system is a two-step process that takes a minimum of 20 months to complete.

Applying for a License

You must:

• Be 16 years of age or older
• Pass a vision test
• Pass a written test consisting of questions about rules of the road and various road signs
• Bring personal ID which contains applicant's signature (i.e. student card, Ontario Health card) and proof of date of birth and name (i.e. Birth Certificate or Passport)
• Pay the current fee of $125

G1 License

After you pass these tests, you will be issued a G1 license. A Graduated license is valid for 5 years.  A G1 entitles you to drive a vehicle under the following restrictions:

• Your blood alcohol must be zero.
• You may not drive alone. A fully licensed ("G") driver with a minimum of 4 years of driving experience must sit in the front passenger seat.
• Each person in the vehicle must have a working seat belt.
• You may not drive on 400-series roads with a posted limit over 80 km/h.
• You must not drive between midnight and 5 am.

G1 Exit Test

After at least 12 months (or 8 months for persons who have successfully completed an approved driver education course such as the one offered by Hunter Driver Education), you can take the G1 Exit Test. The purpose of this road test is to verify your ability to safely drive a car. When you pass your G1 Exit Test, you are issued a G2 license.

G2 License

The G2 level lasts a minimum of 12 months and you can drive on your own at any time on any Ontario road. During this time you may drive a vehicle with only these three important restrictions:

• Your blood alcohol must be zero.
• Each person in the vehicle must have a working seat belt.
• Teenage G2 drivers must limit the number of passengers under age 20 that they carry late at night between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 a.m.

After having your G2 for the minimum time period, you may take the G2 Exit Test to get your full "G" license.

G License
Finally, after passing the G2 Exit Test, you are a fully licensed driver of Class-G vehicles in the Province of Ontario.
